What is Romance, Really?

I am known to be a romantic. I love Jane Austen movies and books with happy endings. In fact, I somehow ended up in the business of romance. In the Mormon book world, I’m called the queen of romance, and I’ve been touted as the number one best-selling LDS romance author for about 15 years now.

The truth is that I am definitely a romantic. I won’t deny it. However, I’m not especially fond of romance novels. I set out to contradict a lot of the stereotypes of romance novels — at least the kind that most people think of when they hear the term. I prefer to call it “relationship fiction,” but there’s no such section in any bookstore.

After researching and writing more than 50 books with relationships at the heart of them, I’ve learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t. I write about people who fall in love...

Happy Birthday Charles Dickens!

And this is not just ANY birthday! The great author was born 200 years ago today! In England they’re actually having some pretty significant celebrations. I truly wish I was in London right now, but alas my budget won’t have it, my body couldn’t handle it, and I’ve got a book to write! However, just for a while today I think I’ll curl up and watch some of my favorite scenes from the miniseries “Bleak House,” which was made for Masterpiece Theater on PBS. A-ma-zing!

When I began my exploration of Dickens’ works, I quickly realized that I didn’t have time to indulge in such long, deep novels, but I realized almost as quickly that there are some excellent film versions of his stories. Something else I discovered as I have watched and rewatched these films, is that his lesser known works are actually rather romantic. You won’t find much romance in “A Christmas Carol” or “Oliver Twist” but I believe that deep down, Mr. Dickens was a hopeless romantic.

If you’re up to reading his novels (I have some friends who have loved them) I would recommend “Our Mutual Friend,” or “Little Dorrit,” as well as the above mentioned “Bleak House.” Remarkable stories with happy endings. I’m fascinated with the way he can take so many different characters and situations which might not seem to have any connection at all, but then you begin to realize threads are being woven together, and in the end, every single character and situation were necessary to bring the complicated plot to its fruition. Poetic justice abounds. Everyone seems to get exactly what they deserve. But be prepared for two extremes: his humor jumps out when you least expect it AND the villains are genuinely terrifying at times. I would love to hear comments on anything you’ve read or seen, or if you embark on reading (or viewing) any of his works, I’d love to hear about that too!

This love story transcends one of the most horrific events in the world’s history. Although, we all know what the outcome was, in regard to the Titanic, you will have a new view of the raw emotions that were experienced by its survivors.

Anita Stansfield demonstrates her gift for storytelling in “Passage on the Titanic”. She allows us to fall in love with Irene and Ella; Two friends brought together by a higher power. She weaves a story of heartache and loss and then brings us full circle to healing and living the life we’re meant to live.

I love the lesson of learning to listen to the promptings of the Spirit. It resonates continually throughout this book and it allowed me to see beyond the normal examples of daily life.

I'm Going to Write a Book!

Guess What? I'm Going to Write a Book!

I wanted to let all of you know that I am officially going to start writing a new novel today. I just finished revisions on the novel that precedes it, and now that book is in the hands of my editor who will polish it up and apply all the rules of grammar and punctuation that she knows much better than I do. This is a new series I’m working on, but I’m not going to tell you anything specific at this point. When we get closer to the first book being released, I’ll start sharing a little bit about the characters and the premise for this story. For now, I just want to share the actual writing journey.

I’ve never done this before, but I’m going to start sharing my daily word counts with you. I’ll be doing that via Twitter, which means that Dina won’t be required to keep posting the updates. I’m new at Tweeting, but Dina’s encouragement got me started and I’m finding it a great way of giving my readers a tiny glimpse into my little life.

So, here’s the deal. I am currently writing four books a year; that’s one every three months. Crazy, eh? I will readily admit that I could not do this without divine intervention. Without a Source of Inspiration that I have no control over, I would never be able to be so prolific. I’ve had lots of practice in processing the information I receive quickly and efficiently, but it still requires prayer, focus, discipline, hard work, and great inspiration. I’ve been somewhat behind since my year of surgeries set everything back, therefore, I’m slow getting started on this book, which is actually due the end of February. It’s Leap Year, so I have an extra day, and the publisher will give me a little bit of leeway, but not too much. If I want my income to remain steady (and I really need that) I have to meet the deadline.

If you’re going to follow my daily updates (which will run on the sidebar of this blog, but you can go to twitter.com and sign up to follow my tweets via email or your cell phone) there’s a couple of things you need to know about my methods. First of all, I never write on Sundays, and I won’t be Tweeting on Sundays either. The other six days of the week I will be doing some amount of writing. Some days I get huge waves of inspiration, the words flow, and the word count can be miraculous! Other days it’s like trudging through mud and there are little to no words. I always keep track of my word count, but now I’m going to share it and I hope you enjoy the journey with me. I will also post a brief thought associated with the reason for high or low counts that particular day.

One more thing. The average length of these novels is 90,000 words. We work in word counts, not page numbers, although that’s approximately 300 manuscript pages, double-spaced. I can go a little below that, or sometimes I go more, depending on how the story works out. So, enough talking! It’s time to get writing. I’d love to hear your comments along the way. Baby SisterJan 12, 2012 10:33 AM Wow...it's hard. But I agree with the others who suggested the Byrnhouse-Davies & Hamilton series, you should start with that. And though I started with First Love and Forever as my very first Anita novel, I would start with Gable Faces East. It explains that story a lot. So, Gable Faces East.

As I finish each book in this series, I will share my journey with you and you can share yours with me. If you'd like to read along with me that would be GREAT. What a perfect way to begin 2012 don't cha think?
